The Attic, Fremantle

Hidden down a small street in Fremantle, off the main drag, in a place of wooden architecture, lies The Attic. Unfortunately, heading to Freo for breakfast is few and far between when you live so north of the river, so D and I made the most of a day out down there, starting with something delectiable.

When you walk into The Attic, you automatically feel the chilled vibe and great ambiance. We were hungry so looked through the menu and ordered at the till prior to finding a cosy spot to sit . As we walked up the stairs we were delighted to find a corner table with comfy couches and a decent size coffee table so we could eat in comfort. The little window above us, looking outside was just gorgeous!

The design of The Attic is just adorable, vintage yet not trying to hard and you just feel comfortable. The addition of a hanging vintage suitcases in the middle of the ceiling was adorable and looked intracate and amazing.

D & I both ordered the scrambled eggs and it was incredible to see how perfect they were. The eggs were the creamiest and fluffiest, I believe, I have ever tasted, and a big enough serving that wasn't too over the top, but not going to keep your stomach grumbling. The addition of fresh rocket to any meal, for me, just takes a dish to a-whole-nother level. The crispy, peppery flavour combined with creamy scrambled eggs and crunchy delectiable rye toast is out of this world!

As we were heading off to spend our day in Fremantle, I had to double back and buy a strawberry and white chocolate muffin from the counter. It was absolutely heavenly! Rustic and delicious with every single mouthful. Everyone needs to stop by here at least once - and if you live close by, you have absolutely no excuse!

Oh did I mention it's all day breakfast? Yeah... enough said.

Cafe Elixir, Wanneroo

After seeing its ratings on Urbanspoon and being told by many how great the breakfasts were, D & I ventured to Cafe Elixir one Saturday. Just to note, Elixir serves an ALL DAY BREAKFAST.

Boy was I dissapointed. I may usually start off with some positives of a cafe and finalise with pointing out what I didn't like or what I would have prefered but this, this was a nightmare.

After walking in we were told it was a 10-15 minute wait for a table, no problems as we didn't have a booking. We sat on the side and waited patiently (no one else was waiting), we see a table free up and with no help from the waitress we sit down there anyway as people were coming in and we didn't want it taken. After waiting a short while we made our orders and were told it was going to be at least 15 minutes until our drinks would come out and a further 30 minutes until the food comes out.

After waiting around an hour, a ridiculous amount of time for our meals (even to the point we asked the waitress where they were), I was excited to dig in and fill up my now growling stomach. The complaint from D came first, but it was yet to be the final of the morning.

His poached eggs on toast were so undercooked they disappeared the moment a knife slightly touched them, into his already very thin bread and became a yolk/white spread, none of which was tasty and most certainly could not fill you up.

As I cut into my eggs, I instantly realised I was to be disappointed too. No, both of my eggs were not undercooked, only one was and the other was so overcooked it was completely hard and not tasty at all.

I looked around to notice other reactions from patrons, I wasn't surprised, one man sitting near us picked up his piece of bacon (which looked extremely undercooked) and threw it on his plate shaking his head, seems we weren't the only ones with terrible food and service.

Just when I think it couldn't get any worse I find a massive chunk of eggshell in my breakfast. How this even happens nowadays, I have no idea. The lack of care about the meals was so obvious, the thing that bugs me about some cafes is how they cram in as many people as they can to make money, but that's when the service and food falls well below par. We informed the waitress when she collected our plates and said she would speak to the owner when we come up to pay.

The one positive thing about my breakfast, the beans. These homemade beans were cooked so well and with the perfect amount of spices that it wasn't overpowering for breakfast but not quite too subtle either. A great combination. The hashbrowns were nice but broke away the moment you touched them.

As we went up to pay the owner asked "why didn't we send the meals back?" I politely replied that we had been waiting so long for our food we weren't going to send it back to wait even longer. He basically said "you know you wouldn't have to wait so long if you sent something back," in a completely rude tone but ended up charging us only $20 in total, which was decent of him, but expected also. Just a note, being cocky and rude is not a way to win back customers who have had a terrible experience at your cafe.

On a side note, due to working very close to this cafe now, I recently went for a takeaway soy chai latte. It was so disgusting I threw it out halfway through. Just to let everyone know, I would never usually do this. I usually get the most for my money, but this latte was undrinkable. It was lumpy the entire way through with chai latte powder because someone was obviously too lazy to mix it properly. Plus the cups are ridiculously small for the price they charge.

I won't ever go back to Elixir, but I'd like to know your thoughts if you've been, comment below!

Kinky Lizard Swell, Scarborough

Of course a Sunday morning rolls around (a few weeks ago now) and we decide to try to go to Voyage... again, with no such luck, again... It was so packed and nearly 11ish (it was going to be a 15 minute wait) so we decided to head off to the new Wild Fig Cafe in Scarborough. Once we got there, we were faced with the same issue... 15 minute wait and by then, breakfast was going to be over. Hungry and cranky I started frantically searching for another cafe to go to, super focused because D & I were starving and found one just up Brighton Road called Kinky Lizard. I decided to give them a call and see what time breakfast stopped serving as there was no point just rocking up after 11... Luckily for us - it's ALL DAY BREAKFAST on the weekends! Pretty sure the guy laughed at me when I squealed in excitement and told him we would be there soon. Oh well, better to be excited right?!

This place is an absolute suburban hidden treasure and I can't believe I didn't discover it until now. I had the vego breakfast, a big brekkie filled with sourdough toast, truss tomatoes, mushroom, avocado, spinach and poached eggs. It was incredible. The food was all cooked perfectly and the freshness of the produce and ingredients was beyond what I had expected! Each aspect complemented the other well and it was extremely satisfying.

It took a bit of convincing, but D decided to go try a sweet breakfast instead of the usual savoury. Sometimes there is that moment where a plate of food is served in front of you and it doesn't just look like the tastiest concoction you've ever imagined, but it actually looks like a work of art too. D's ricotta hotcakes were just that. Perfectly fluffy, a perfect size, with delicate poached pears, doused in berry coulis and coconut marscarpone sitting on top.

This is perfection on a plate even to those who don't have a sweet tooth.

We also orderded a green tea and a soy mocha, both went down and absolute treat and we didn't have to wait too long for them to come out. They have an awesome selection of goodies at the front counter too and an espresso bar in East Perth so check out their website!

I half really want everyone to go here to check out how incredible the food is, but the other half of me wants to keep this as Scarborough's secret treasure...

I would love for you guys to follow my blog and comment if you go to any of the places! :)

Sayers Sister, Northbridge

It was an exciting moment when I heard Sayer's owners Mark & Steph were opening another cafe by the name of Sayers Sisters in Northbridge. Sayers has always been one of my favourite spots to breakfast/brunch at, so of course I had to head there the week it opened! I knew Saturday would be busy but headed in anyway, meeting my best friend Ash to try out this new little spot!

When I arrived the line was (as expected) out the door, but after only five or ten minutes we were seated outside and reading the delicious menu! As a walk up and pay before your meal kind of cafe, I would expect you could pay separately, considering one of us had to stay at the table to secure it. I've never been told we couldn't pay separately at Sayers in Leederville but alas the new cafe has a no separate billing rule. That was interesting and a bit confusing, however, they decided "just this one time" we could order that way which was much easier!

Heading in to order gave me an opportunity to admire the beautiful decor. Inside is set up with spots to sit along the side walls and a communal bench with high chairs in the middle, covered in lovely fresh flowers and hanging lights. There's also a little front outside area where we sat with some little outside tables and chairs. The cashier area is lined with tea pots and teas and baked goods you can purchase - very tempting!

Our drinks came out a little bit later, Ash ordering a coffee and me a pot of green tea. Both were disappointing. I'm not sure if they were just sitting there for ages, or if something is wrong with their hot water but they were both completely luke warm and really unenjoyable.

The meals took a long time to come out, but it wasn't really a big deal as we had a lot to catch up on, if you weren't in a lazy day frame of mind however, it probably was a bit too long. We did end up asking when our breakfast would be out, considering 45 minutes had passed but were assured they were the next order.

I ordered the poached eggs ($11) which came out perfectly cooked, delicate and delicious and after feeling like something fresh, ordered a side rocket & parmasen salad ($3) to go along with it. As much as I love this combination, it was almost ruined with far too much lemon. I am an absolute lover of lemon, lime and all things sour, but this was even a bit much for me! Lucky the eggs and toast were perfection...

Ash's cinnamon and vanilla porridge with kumquat marmalade ($13.50) was insanely tasty (of course she let have a taste!) it was creamy and sweet and just the right amount. In true Sayers style it was presented in the cutest possible way. A little pot and a mini milk bottle - if you like extra milk on your porridge! Along with some honey on the side.

I would definitely head back to try again and suggest you try it out for yourselves, I would love to hear some comments on your experiences there, so write them below!

P.s. there's no menu on the normal Sayers website, or on their Facebook but someone has uploaded one to urbanspoon so check it out there!

Dizzy Witch Cafe, Northbridge

It was a rainy morning when we ventured to the Dizzy Witch Cafe, I had been there before and had nothing but a positive experience and wanted to try it again!

The place had definitely changed it's decor around since the last time I had been and, as always, it's comfortable, quirky and a lovely place to dine. Although situated in Northbridge the Dizzy Witch is that little bit out of the main strip which makes it ideal for a lazy morning. The highlight is it's one of the few and far between places that do an ALL DAY BREAKFAST! Oh yes!

As I went up to order for the both of us something caught my eye... Chai banana bread! There was no way I was going to pass up the opportunity to taste it, so I ordered it along with the Dizzy's Avocado, Tomato & Feta (with extra poached eggs) and D's poached eggs on toast with a side of potato rosti's.

There's something special about toasted banana bread with melted butter. It's a luxury, some comfort food and just hits the food pleasure zones. When there's something extra added like Chai, if you already have a soft spot for the extra ingredient, it creates a whole new meaning to foodgasm. Chai banana bread served on a wooden board did just that!

My breakfast came out looking like a tower of perfection! As I am not a huge fan of tomatoes, or toma-toes to some dear friends of mine, they were a bit much for me. Perhaps because they weren't cooked at all, just cut quite thickly and cold. If you loved tomatoes, I'm sure you would be more than happy with the way they were. The eggs were perfectly poached and I absolutely adore the peppery crispness fresh rocket adds to any dish. The balsamic glaze had just the right sweetness and acidity to complement the different textures of avocado and feta and creamy flavours. I probably needed an extra piece of toast due to the poached eggs added to the dish but it was delicious. D's poached eggs were also cooked perfectly and the side of potato rosti's were crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle.

Sometimes I'm disheartened by the fact that I'm on a hunt for new places and new breakfasts every week, it means I probably won't be back to the Dizzy Witch Cafe for a little bit, but hopefully not too long! I suggest you all check it out and leave me a comment from your experience.

Fez Cafe, Mt Lawley

Meeting my best friend for on a Saturday morning for breakfast and a catch up on all things that are going on in our lives, is one thing I look forward to the most!
I had never noticed Fez before so I was glad Ashleigh suggested it, always needing somewhere new to try and discover!

I ordered a soy chai latte and it was delicious on a cold morning, perfect temperature, not too sweet and a complete warmer. Fez is quite a big cafe but once you're in your own world of gossip and discussion the other patrons don't seem to bother you so much!

Ash loves her smoothies and wasn't very hungry so she ordered a Mango Magic ($7) it was thick and tasty and filled her up so much she definitely didn't need any food and was perfect to kick start her morning.

When the signature dish is a vegetarian option, I couldn't possibly be any happier and of course it's something I would choose, so for my breakfast I ordered the Fez Eggs ($17)
I absolutely love when breakfast dishes look like works of art, and, although you don't know where to start to try and eat it, it makes the meal all the more tasty.

The Fez eggs are poached free range eggs, grilled cherry tomatoes, avocado, spinach and herbed fetta on toast. In all reality, this is a winning combination and the fact that it was cooked so perfectly in every aspect made it one of the best breakfasts I've ever had!

With perfectly poached eggs, some thick toast, grilled tomatoes and wilted spinach  the creaminess of the avocado and the herb fetta added a bit of a dramatic textured edge and cut through spectacularly, rounding off and all up tastebud tantalising meal!

I'd be back to eat the same dish again, but I would also love to try out their 17 ingredients wholegrain toasted macadamia apricot museli!

Bay 33, Waterman's Bay

Seeing as Wild Fig closed up shop and moved to Scarborough I was insanely anxious to see the finished product of the new cafe taking its place, Bay 33.

The design of Bay 33 looks absolutely wonderful with its light blue decor. It's fresh and appealing and perfect for a spot right on the ocean. I still wonder why they haven't painted over the horrible pink colour on the outside of the building though... it would be a hell of a lot more attractive if they did! Regardless of that, it looks amazing inside and out in the al fresco area too! (decor pics from bay33's website)

Both up for a simple meal, we ordered poached eggs with a side of hashbrowns. I love the fact on the menu if you want an omelette you can choose three fillings you like, perfect if you are fussy!

It took a little bit to order and a while to come out but it was very busy, I'm quite sure every seat was taken as we saw people be turned away when entering. The plates came out and didn't look like the nicest presentation in the world, the poached eggs weren't all collected together but the whites were cooked and the egg perfectly runny, the hasbrowns were nice and the sourdough toast - always a pleaser. They were all a little cold, including my Chai Latte, but definitely delightful.

All the staff are friendly and happy to help find you a seat when they are busy. The menu is varied and should satisfy all sorts of breakfast munchers! I know I'll always come back, there's no real reason not to.

Check out their website for the menu!

On a side note: Yes, this is a breakfast blog, but I also dine out for other meals of the day! One in particular I took my mum to Bay 33 for lunch (back in April!) and it was so delicious I simply have to tell you all anyway. We ordered a whole range of starters to share salmon crepes (for mum only), as she explained, were one of the most delicious things she has ever tasted. As a big smoked salmon fan already, they were served cold and absolutely perfect!

White Salt, Sorrento

Even though it is a local, I've always steered away from going to White Salt for breakfast, simply because I know how expensive the dinners are. But alas, the aim to head to Voyage was disrupted due to the fact they sat us, gave us menus, walked back with water then decided to tell us they aren't serving any of the breakfast  menu due to renovations... extremely irritating considering they could have told us that as we walked in? So, instead of driving off we decided to at least look at the White Salt menu and were pleasantly surprised at the resonable price.

As we walked in we were welcomed by friendly staff, given a nice seat and told of the free toast bar. YES, FREE TOAST! Basically, different New Norcia breads are laid out - even a beautiful fruit and nut bread - on a table at the back of the restaurant where you can go and make your own toast, as much as you want and there was also free filter coffee... no cups though?

D decided on his staple poached eggs on toast and a side of hashbrowns which came out beautifully cooked and looked lovely.

I chose to get the spring onion omelette which was filled with spring onion, tomato and cheddar cheese with a fresh rocket salad. This was without a doubt the biggest omelette I had ever seen, literally the size of the entire plate but it was flipped and there was no way I could finish - especially after grabbing a piece of toast from the toast bar. It was extremely delicious though, the eggs weren't overcooked and the freshness of the rocket was amazing. I am not a huge fan of tomatoes but they were chopped up to a perfect size and complemented the eggs well. I'm also not a massive fan of fried foods and the hasbrowns were a little oily for me but slightly different to the packet ones that you seem to get at most places so they were nice. If you get the omellete, don't order sides!

It was a rainy day, but I love nothing more than the beach in winter so sitting inside and watching the rain over the ocean made for a perfect morning at White Salt.

Check out their website for all the details!

Cnr, Northbridge

One morning we decided to head to the city for awhile to shop around and what a better idea than head in there for some breakfast!

After much deliberation and not-really-deciding-at-all for where to go, we chose to just drive to Northbridge then walk around until we found somewhere! Honestly, sometimes this is the best way to find hidden secret but delicious places.

Walking through Northbridge lead us to the main piazza area and hidden at the back of it was a cafe that looked beyond suitable for our breakfast needs - Cnr (corner). As a vegetarian, places that cater for vegans are always a major plus - Cnr even provides some meal as raw vegan, so big props in that department!

The moment we walked in I absolutely adored the feel of the place, we sat on comfortable mis matched chairs which were comfortable and totally different to a normal table and seat setting. The 'table' was indeed very tiny, which is fine if you are just getting coffee but for two plates of breakfast it ended up being a big squashed!

The decor is super cool a real warehouse feeling without looking tacky and awesome signs all around.

My meal came out a little cold and I wasn't overly impressed with it. The fried eggs were overdone, small yolks and the hollindase had a thick layer on top like it had been sitting there for awhile. The avocado was perfectly ripe and the toast was delicious, so I made sure every bite included all bits from the plate and it tasted pretty good.

Generally I'm always happy with my selections but I definitely wish I had D's. I tasted the mushrooms and they were a perfect size and super delicious, the side of beans looked amazing - but again a little cold.

I would definitely recommend grabbing a yummy fresh juice (sorry for the blurry pic!)

I wasn't discouraged though, I left with some takeaway macaroons - who could resist?! And I will definitely be back to give it another go - I have a feeling lunch here would be something worth talking about. They have a pretty average no-real-information website but you can find them on Facebook where it is a bit livelier.

Crepe Cherie, Claremont

Sometimes when you have a food craving, nothing with suffice until that particular craving has been satisfied. I woke up one morning and realised I absolutely had to have pancakes for breakfast/probably brunch by the time I got out of bed. There was limited discussion about making our own and then came to a realisation of how much better crepes are than pancakes and that was it, it had to be done!

If you a looking for a crepe, it has to be one made perfect and delicious so we decided to head all the way to Claremont to Crepe Cherie!

The extensive menu of crepe delights make it very difficult to chose which one to have and I love that they also have savoury options for those not wishing to give in to their suguary side.

The place is simply adorable and the wait staff we had spoke French, or put it on, I'm not sure, but they all seemed authentic and wore striped shirts to complement the French theme. I went inside to grab some water from the jugs and watched the crepe artist at work, it really is a quick process and a skill that must be mastered to perfection in order to created a wonderful crepe!

D went for the Madeline, a classic Nutella and banana combination that I actually remember eating a fair amount of whilst I was in Europe, I definitely had a bite and it was simply delicious and I know he enjoyed every last bite.

I went a little more out there, it's not like me to crave anything sweet and perhaps I went a bit overboard but I still back up my choice! I ordered the Brigitte, which was crepe with cooked pears and chocolate fudge. You can add ice-cream for $1 or cream for 50c and seeing as we were making the most of it we both included some vanilla ice-cream with our brunch. There was nothing beating it, the cool, clean taste broke up the intensity of the chocolate fudge just perfectly and really made it a stand out dish.

I would definitely make the Claremont trip again if I ever feel an intense urge for sweet deliciousness!
